Nonny

If you know Nonny, you love her!  Mark, Landrie and I were happy to get to spend lots of extra time with Landrie's greatgrandma, Nonny, but we would rather have not been there for this reason.  Nonny fell and broke the top of her femur/hip on the same leg that she already had had a hip replacement.  She's 89, and if you've ever known someone who has suffered from a broken hip, you know the recovery is not fun!

There are lots of kids, grandkids, and even greatgrandkids in the family, and after surgery, Nonny's hospital room was FULL of people who love her.  She had flowers on every surface and her pink cell rang off the hook with calls from everyone who couldn't be there.

Our little family of 3 went up to help at the start of March, but Mark had to come back during the week to work.  Landrie and I packed up each day and spent the days in the hospital.  Landrie was a trooper and slept in her stroller.  We just pushed it into Nonny's hospital room bathroom!

Landrie and Nonny are best buds.  :)

After My cousin Mark and Uncle Craig were with us too.  After an intense first few days, Nonny made progress quickly, and was soon out and about in a wheelchair.

She's a happy 5 month old girl!

We didn't make it to the beach, but she did relax out on the balcony.

Aren't you a bit young to be sun bathing?

SIX weeks later...

After LOTS of hard work and physical therapy 3 times a day, Nonny was ready to go home!  The original talk was that she might never be out of a wheelchair, or that she might be in a hospital/rehab center for months.  We were overjoyed!!  Our prayers were answered!

Nonny needed someone to stay with her for 2 weeks as she adjusted from life in the hospital to living on her own again.  Landrie and I have a flexible enough schedule to be able to go!

We hopped on a plane (that's a whole separate blog post!) and met Nonny at the hospital.  When I saw her walking with a walker I almost cried!  She made HUGE progress while we were gone and other family members were staying with her.

As we left the hospital, Nonny was all smiles.  She couldn't believe that the trees had leaves on them again!  She was SO GLAD to get back home and to see the bay.

This is how Landrie felt about Nonny coming home!  This trip she was a grown up 7 months old.

We had a constant stream of home health nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and nurse's aides visiting everyday.  There were no breaks in therapy!
Nonny practiced getting in and out of the car and driving everyday.  That's one last goal she hasn't met yet!  She can do everything else completely on her own now.

We had lots of great girl time together!  We were all thankful that Mark was able to drive up for a long weekend in the middle of it all. We could never have made it that long apart!  We missed him so much!

Doesn't she look great?  Nonny even felt good enough to go out for dinner a few times with Uncle Mark and Aunt Bernadette.  This was right before we went out for my cousin Liesl's birthday dinner!   (Where we ended up with 3 non-working cameras!)  Happy Birthday, Liesl!

When we went somewhere with too much walking, Nonny used a wheelchair.  Landrie got to ride in her lap.  Corpus has the nicest people!  Push around your sweet grandma who is holding a smiling baby and you are guaranteed to have people stop and help left and right!

It won't be long before Nonny's driving herself all over town and flying all over the country again.  I am so proud of her!  We loved our time with you, Nonny!
